Under the Lake
I’m standing knee deep in the water as the shadows turn to twilight on the beach. / The lake is smooth and calm, but I’m thinking of John, / Buried out there somewhere in the deep. / We had been planning to get married, but then one night the lake took him away. / All they ever found was the rowboat upside-down / Drifting aimlessly around the bay. / Down under the lake / The world is dark and calm. / The weeds gently sway beneath the waves. / Despite my mistakes, the dark green water holds me tight. / I think I’ll take a walk down there tonight. / My heart’s as heavy as my pockets. I hope I have enough stones to keep me down. / I know that I belong on the bottom there with John. / Maybe I’ll feel good again somehow. / The water’s up above my head, now. I’m sorry, John, for what I did that night. / But I knew you’d been untrue, so I let go of you, / And watched as you sank slowly out of sight.
